The main lubricant marketers in South Africa have invested heavily in the ROSE Foundation. This investment has been the driving force behind our success.

We have taken great strides in recycling used oil from the early days when there were only 8 lubes marketers as members. Today all 15 major lubricant marketers and blenders are members.

Since our inception in 1994, our members have invested more than R99 million towards operations and infrastructure. Eight of the main members have a director on the board. They are responsible for setting the broad strategic direction and ensuring that the financial position of the company is sound.

They pay a contribution of 5 cents for each litre of new lubricating oil they sell. These funds are used as follows:

• To fund the collection of used oil all over SA
• To offer an incentive payment to generators of used oil
• To promote recycling of used oil
• To fund R & D in better ways to process used oil

Each member manufactures and markets a vast range of lubricating oils, greases and other industrial products. The following are typical products produced and marketed by the members that eventually become used oil:

• Engine oils for cars
• Engine oils for trucks, buses, tractors and earthmoving equipment
• Hydraulic oil for ships and industry
• Gear oil for cars, buses, trucks and factory gearboxes
• Air compressor oil, machine oils, chain oils
• Diesel engine oils, hydraulic oil and gear oil from mining and quarrying operations.
